Former teacher Roland Simmons has been found guilty of sexually abusing boys at a children’s home in Hastings during the 1970s.

Following a trial at Lewes Crown Court, Mr Simmons was convicted of 10 counts of indecent assault against four boys between 1974 and 1979. The offences took place at Guestling House Children’s Home, where he worked as a teacher.

The court heard that the victims, now in their 60s, were all in local authority care at the time. One described waking to find Simmons abusing him, while another spoke of repeated attempts to isolate him. The prosecutor said Simmons abused his position of trust, targeting boys he believed would struggle to speak out.

Abuse in Children’s Homes

Organisations that run care facilities and children’s homes have a legal duty to keep those in their care safe. Where abuse is carried out by a staff member in the course of their role, the organisation itself may be held legally responsible. East Sussex County Council ran the Guestling House at the time and may be vicariously liable for Simmons’ actions.

Criminal proceedings are important in bringing perpetrators to justice but those affected by abuse may choose to explore civil claims where answers, acknowledgement of wrongdoing, and financial compensation for the harm they suffered may be possible.
