Navigating the Scottish Redress Scheme: Support, Sensitivity, and Justice

Review

For many survivors of historical child abuse in Scotland, pursuing redress through the Scottish Abuse Redress Scheme is not just a legal process—it’s an emotional journey toward acknowledgment, healing, and justice.

The scheme was established by the Redress for Survivors (Historical Child Abuse in Care) (Scotland) Act 2021. Set up to acknowledge the harm caused by abuse and survivors may be offered financial payments of up to £100,000, apologies (if desired), and emotional support. Survivors can apply directly to the scheme but having a solicitor to help with this can make a huge difference. The process can be complicated and awards from the scheme not always at a sufficient level. We can ensure you fully understand the process, implications and that ultimately you receive a fair award.

For many, the process itself – though designed to be survivor-focused – can bring back long-buried emotions, memories, and psychological distress.

At Middleton Law, we see amazing strength and resilience from the individuals who approach us for support through this deeply personal process. A recent client review captures what so many survivors experience when deciding to take this important step:

“Lisa Gafarova contacted me back with regards to helping me. She handled my feelings and emotions with such sensitivity and checked in to make sure I was OK emotionally throughout the full process… Lisa put a lot of effort into my case to lessen relived trauma and worked tirelessly, professionally and empathetically… I got a better result than I ever imagined.”
