Eastwood Park Detention Centre Compensation Scheme Officially Launched

On January 14, 2025, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) announced the official launch of the Eastwood Park Detention Centre Compensation Scheme, offering long-overdue recognition and reparations to survivors of abuse.

This scheme is designed to compensate former detainees who suffered physical or psychological harm while held at Eastwood Park between the 1970s and early 1980s. Survivors now have until January 14, 2026, to notify the MOJ of their claims under this scheme.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for compensation, claimants must provide proof of detention at Eastwood Park during the relevant time period.

Compensation Categories

The scheme outlines three levels of compensation:

  • Category 1: For individuals detained for three months or less and alleging abuse – £3,000.
  • Category 2: For individuals detained for more than three months and alleging abuse – £4,000.
  • Category 3: For individuals who suffered lasting physical or psychological injuries due to their treatment at Eastwood Park (supported by medical evidence) – £7,500 to £9,500.

Claims involving allegations of sexual abuse will also be considered under this scheme, or through civil litigation if appropriate.Abuse Law

Additional Support for Claimants

Claimants will receive 100% of their awarded compensation, with no deductions for legal fees or administrative costs. A dedicated MOJ team has been established to ensure claims are processed efficiently. In addition to financial compensation, the MOJ will issue formal apologies to victims.

Why Legal Representation Matters

While it is possible to apply to the scheme directly, survivors may benefit significantly from experienced legal representation. Lawyers specialising in historical abuse cases can help maximise compensation by ensuring all evidence is properly presented and claims are robustly supported. Recent evidence suggests compensation awards can increase substantially when solicitors are involved.
