Extension to the Eastwood Park Compensation Scheme: What Survivors Need to Know

Survivors of abuse at the former Eastwood Park Detention Centre now have additional time to seek justice and financial redress. The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the scheme has been extended by a further 18 months, moving the deadline for applications to 14 July 2027.

This extension provides crucial breathing space for individuals who may only now feel ready to come forward. At Middleton Law, our specialist Abuse Law team is committed to guiding survivors through the process with sensitivity, clarity and unwavering support.

What Is the Eastwood Park Compensation Scheme?

The scheme was created by the Government to offer recognition, an apology, and financial compensation to former detainees who suffered physical abuse while held at Eastwood Park, which operated between 1964 and 1995.

Compensation is awarded across defined categories, with payments ranging from £3,000 to £9,500, depending on:

  • Time spent detained
  • The nature and impact of the abuse
  • Evidence of lasting physical or psychological injury

As legal fees are paid by the government, applicants retain 100% of their compensation, with no deductions for legal fees.

Why Has the Scheme Been Extended?

For many survivors, talking about past abuse – especially trauma that occurred in childhood – can take years. The new extension recognises this reality and ensures that those who have not yet come forward are not excluded.

The scheme also follows longstanding allegations of mistreatment at Eastwood Park, including the conviction of former officer Patrick Devaney for abusing detainees.
