Scotland’s Redress Scheme provides financial payments, apologies and support to people who were abused in care as children before 1 December 2004. Introduced under the Redress for Survivors (Historical Child Abuse in Care) (Scotland) Act 2021, it has now been running for over four years.

How the scheme is being used

Recent figures from the Scheme give a clearer picture of how widely the scheme is being used and how many people are coming forward.

Since the scheme opened:

• More than 5,800 people have applied
• Over 2,600 survivors have accepted payments
• More than £139 million has been paid out

Most people are choosing individually assessed applications, which reflects the need for cases to be considered in detail rather than through a standard payment.

Overall, the figures point to a significant number of people now taking steps to have their experiences formally recognised.

The Reality of the Process

Applying to the scheme can be more involved than people expect. It often means setting out difficult experiences in detail and waiting for a decision that may take time.
