Durham Breast Cancer Service Report
The latest reports – along with new BBC investigations – have revealed an even more disturbing picture of what went wrong within the breast cancer service at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The independent investigation confirms that women were given unnecessary mastectomies, cancers were missed, and warnings were repeatedly brushed aside for years. For many, what should have been safe, life-saving care has instead become a source of trauma, doubt and anger – and hundreds of patients are now discovering they may have been harmed.
What the New Reports Show
An independent review by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) in April identified many concerning issues. The scale and seriousness of the issues revealed in this week’s report are wider than previously known, with confirmation that:
- Women underwent unnecessary mastectomies and repeat operations
- Cancers were missed or diagnosed late
- Outdated tests (including fine needle aspiration) were used despite known risks of inaccurate results
- Very few women were offered reconstruction, even where it could be an option
- Some operations were carried out at concerning speed, raising questions about safety
- Many women describe feeling dismissed, rushed, or treated without compassion
One review found that warnings had been raised repeatedly for years – yet little changed.
Patients’ report harrowing experiences – being wrongly told that mastectomy was their only option, others left feeling ‘butchered’ after rushed surgery and many more describing care that lacked dignity, compassion and basic respect.
More than 1,600 patient records are now being reviewed, with dozens of cases already identified as causing significant harm.
