A new interim report from the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation, chaired by Baroness Valerie Amos, has found that failings in England’s maternity services are “much worse” than expected. The review identifies serious issues, including inadequate care, poor cleanliness, and instances of discriminatory treatment, particularly affecting women of colour, working-class women, and those with mental health conditions.
Previous inquiries into maternity care across the UK, including Morecambe Bay, Shrewsbury & Telford, East Kent, Nottingham, and Leeds all raised some huge concerns. Despite hundreds of recommendations from these past reviews, concerns persist about systemic problems and preventable harm in maternity services.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has emphasised that the findings demonstrate “systemic failures causing preventable tragedies” and has announced a new National Maternity and Neonatal Taskforce to implement the review’s recommendations when the final report is published in the spring of 2026.
